Why should we save birds?

Nowadays everyone is talking about the conservation of birds. Ornithologists, wildlife researchers, environmentalists and scientists are all working on saving birds from getting extinct.

Keeping aside all the statistical data and scientific studies. Let’s get to the basics. Today most people know that conserving birds is necessary, but it is also essential for the people to understand why birds are a significant part of our lives and why we should save them.

Imagine you wake up one fine morning and there are no birds in the sky; no chirping and singing could be heard. The world would appear silent and lifeless like a dead man. No colours in the sky would be seen. The world would look as pale as a corpse.

If our feathered friends became extinct or there is a significant decline in their population, then it would affect us far more than a lifeless morning. It would change our lives completely.

It would have an adverse impact not only on us humans but also millions of other species living on this planet.

Let’s discuss a few examples about the importance of the bird:

Birds are the environmental barometer:

Birds are like the barometer of the environment, they give us an early warning about the destruction coming in the near future. For example, birds are sensitive to air pollution as they have large lungs and a higher rate of metabolism. As a result, their lungs accumulate contaminants faster than other creatures. Anything that affects birds would surely affect us directly or indirectly.

Birds control pests:

Many birds eat insects as a primary source of food. It was discovered in a study that birds eat millions of tons of insects annually. The existence of birds helps to reduce insect outbreaks to a great extent. Many people keep nest boxes and birdhouses to control pests in their farms and gardens.

Birds help in pollination:

Along with the bees and butterflies, birds also play an essential role in pollination. Around 5% of the plants that are used for medicine and food are pollinated by birds.

Birds help in seed dispersal:

It is not possible for humans to plant each and every tree. Birds eat fruits and seeds and disperse it wherever they go. Sometimes the seeds get stuck in the feathers, fur and their feet. Once those seeds come in contact with the soil, it may start growing and turn into a new plant.

Birds enhance the beauty of the landscape:

Birds add colour and life wherever they go. Their melodious chirps are pleasing to ears.

Some birds, like vultures and crows, clean the environment by eating dead and decaying animals. They also help in preventing deadly diseases that can be spread by decaying dead bodies.

These were only a few examples that described the importance of birds. Birds play a very important part in the functioning of the ecosystems, if anything happens to our feathered friends it will have an adverse impact on our health, food, economy and our beautiful earth.

Let’s open our eyes and take a step forward in conserving the birds before it’s too late.
